Welcome to Distance Learning at the University of Arkansas--Fort Smith

Distance learning is an essential component for fulfilling the academic mission of the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith.  UAFS incorporates synchronous and asynchronous learning via the Blackboard learning management system (LMS).  Additionally, distance education courses are offered via compressed interactive video to select off-campus sites.  Due of the importance of distance learning, the Department of Instructional Support reports directly to the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor in the office of academic affairs.

The University was authorized to use WebCT as its LMS for delivering online courses in the year 2000.  The primary focus of distance learning at UAFS includes the development and dissemination of online courses offered using the Blackboard LMS.  UAFS has embraced the adoption of new and innovative distance learning technologies.  The transition to the Blackboard Learn LMS from its current predecessor (CE8) is an important step in this direction.  Beginning spring 2012 all online courses will be offered using Blackboard Learn.
