An Outstanding University Learning & Research Center

The Learning and Research Center at Boreham Library at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith will create a 40,000 square-foot addition along the south side of the Boreham Library.  This expansion will increase seating from 384 to 920, include 214 computer stations, create space for roughly 52,000 new volumes, and feature a 24-hour study area and computer lab for those studying late at night.  The Learning and Research Center will also house the Babb Institute for Applied Innovation, consisting of high-tech teleconferencing space, conference rooms, online research capability, and interactive presentation venues available for University and community use devoted to advancing economic development in the region—a key part of UAFS’s mission.

The addition, along with a refit of the existing Boreham Library, is expected to cost approximately $14.2 million. A Commerce Department grant, along with monies provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, funding from the State of Arkansas, new bond issues, and smart refinancing of existing bonds, will cover much of that cost.

Additionally, as part of the Giving Opportunity Now campaign, the University is committed to raising $5 million in private gifts to help offset costs. Donors have already given $1 million. For every private dollar raised, a dollar of bond proceeds will be made available for other pressing campus and renovation projects.

There are many naming opportunities available at varying giving levels in keeping with our University naming policy. For more detailed information, refer to detailed plans of the first floor and second floor, or call the Foundation at (479) 788-7020.
