TUTOR POOL: UPWARD BOUND: Classic & Math/Science Programs

DUTIES AND 
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Upward Bound Classic and Upward Bound Math/Science are federally funded educational opportunity programs for high school students, designed to generate the skills, motivation, and desire necessary to pursue and succeed in higher education. 

 

Primary responsibilities include providing tutorial assistance to Upward Bound students.  Tutors will be expected to promote grade appropriate academic readiness and good study habits. Sessions will include, but are not limited to, assisting with comprehension of course work; enhancing learning concepts and strategies; test preparation; and assisting with skill building as needed.  Tutors will work closely with staff and participate as a team member to improve student retention and success. Tutoring takes place during after “school hours” Monday – Friday and occasionally on Saturday.  Tutors work part-time and will be scheduled based upon their availability.  Tutors may be needed in, but not limited to, the following subject areas:

  • English: Composition, Literature, Reading
  • History
  • Mathematics: Algebra I, Algebra II, Algebra III, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Probability & Statistics, Trigonometry
  • Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, Physics
  • Spanish
QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum qualifications include completed course work in subject area with above average grades, sophomore or higher standing at a post-secondary institution, and well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.  Candidates with tutoring and/or professional secondary education experience preferred.  Desired qualifications include the ability to present material using verbal, visual, and/or written methods; work experience in a high school setting; and capability to incorporate technology into tutorial sessions.  Candidates with prior experience working with similar student populations are encouraged to apply.

SALARY:

$9 to $17 per hour ($9—no degree; $10—bachelor’s degree; $11—master’s degree; $14 - $17—secondary teachers with experience in subject area required).
