UAFS Student Wins National ADDY Award(Posted: June 4, 2014)
What started as a class project ended with national recognition when former University of Arkansas - Fort Smith student Brooke Cagle received a silver National Student ADDY Award for a board game she designed.
Hipstafy, a parodic hipster board game Cagle created in her package design class, won gold awards at the local and regional ADDY Awards ceremonies before moving onto the national ceremony held May 31 in Boca Raton, Fla. Cagle is just the third UAFS student to win an ADDY award at the national level.
"Hipstafy is a trivia game about the music, fashion and lifestyle of the hipster culture," said Cagle, who graduated from Greenwood High School in 2008. "It's an amazing thing to be able to design such an intricate production piece and have others acknowledge the hard work put into it."
Cagle, who also worked as a graphic design intern in the UAFS Marketing and Communications Office, cited the artistic freedom of her classes at the University as a key to her success.
"During my time at UAFS, most of our professors gave us creative freedom when it came to our designs. This was a huge factor in being able to create such a trendy piece for my portfolio," Cagle said. "The hipster term is one that won't be around forever, but it was fun to incorporate their culture into a piece that ended up taking off, catching the eye of many students and professionals in various fields and becoming very successful."
But Cagle enjoyed recognition from more than just the ADDYs. Shortly before graduating from UAFS in the spring, Cagle displayed her work at an annual portfolio review for graphic design students at the University. There, she met Joey Nelson and Jeremy Teff with BLKBOX Labs, an advertising agency in Fayetteville.
The next day, she received a job offer from the company to work as a graphic designer.
"BLKBOX is only two years old, but we are extremely successful and have a very impressive clientele," Cagle said. "I'm thrilled to be working under very talented people who care about branding just as much as I do. I'm going to learn a lot from this company and become an even better designer."
