Fall Registration Open at UAFS(Posted: June 9, 2014)
Registration for the fall semester is now underway at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, highlighted by the new robotics program offered by the University for the first time.
The fall 2014 semester begins on Aug. 18 and ends on Dec. 10. Transfer and returning students with 13 or more credit hours may register for their fall courses through their adviser. New students, or transfer and returning students with less than 12 credit hours, will register through New Student Orientation programs throughout the summer.
The University added the robotics certificate program to its curriculum in an effort to provide skilled workers to a field which has a scarcity of training options in the region. Currently, UAFS is the only college in the state to offer the certification, which was created following a $300,000 grant from Gov. Mike Beebe.
The certificate of proficiency, which is offered through the College of Applied Science and Technology, offers students the opportunity to work in careers such as maintenance technicians, industrial robotics technicians and engineering technicians.
John Martini of Fort Smith, assistant professor of electronics technology at UAFS, said small class sizes, quality of instruction and career opportunities are a few of many reasons why students should consider the program.
"For students who wish to position themselves for an opportunity to be valuable employees, the Certificate of Proficiency in Robotics Technology at UAFS is a perfect choice," he said. "This certificate will put them on the cutting edge of new technology, with an opportunity for employment in an exciting career field."
Dr. Georgia Hale, interim provost and senior vice chancellor, said the robotics certificate is one of several new offerings the University anticipates offering this fall, including a Bachelor of Business Administration in international business, a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance, a Bachelor of General Studies, and a Certificate of Proficiency in professional sales. These programs have been approved by the University of Arkansas System Board of Trustees but are pending approval of the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board in July 2014.
The Admissions and School Relations Office is located on the second floor of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center. Office hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Fridays. The class schedule is available on the UAFS website under "Academic Quicklinks."
