Cadet William Hutson |
William Hutson of Cowlington, Okla., received a three-year Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty scholarship totaling $45,900 through the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith’s Reserve Officers' Training Corps program (ROTC).
The scholarship will pay for Hutson’s room and board, books and provide a monthly stipend which will increase each year he is in school.
Hutson said he is grateful for the opportunity the scholarship has provided him.
“To me, this scholarship means everything,” Hutson said. “Not only has it given me the means to continue forward and get an education, but it has given me the tools to have a successful career in the United States Army. I could not be more grateful.”
Hutson met all of the qualifications for the scholarship by maintaining a 3.0 grade point average and passing his Army Physical Fitness Test, as well as being recommended by his ROTC instructors. Hutson will serve in the Arkansas National Guard as an officer after graduating from UAFS. He plans to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in psychology spring 2019.
In addition to his hard work, Hutson gave credit to his success to the guidance from his ROTC instructors and senior cadets.
The Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty scholarship is awarded nationally to an on-campus student who meets all qualifications and is wanting to go into the National Guard or Army Reserves as an officer upon graduation.
The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps is a leadership program seeking students that want more from their college experience. The program trains students from every major on campus to be leaders in their field after graduation. ROTC graduates can serve on active duty in the military or closer to home in the National Guard or reserves.
Students can enroll in ROTC classes with zero commitment to the military, and those who choose to sign a contract with the Army to serve as officers upon graduation receive generous scholarship opportunities.
