What can I do with a Bachelor of Science in middle childhood education?
Certificate of Proficiency
This 15-hour program provides a curriculum designed for those who teach English as a second language domestically and abroad. Courses include Language and Culture, Second Language Acquisition, English Grammar, and Intermediate Spanish II. By completing this coursework and the state-required PRAXIS Assessment, licensed teachers can add an ESL endorsement to their Arkansas teaching license.
Endorsements
Special Education Resource Room Endorsement
This 12-hour program is designed to address special education and is not available
in all licensure areas. Current students must be admitted to the teacher education
program to enroll in this program. By completing this coursework and the state-required
PRAXIS Assessment, licensed teachers can add the SERR endorsement to their Arkansas
teaching license.
Application Requirements
The middle childhood education program is designed for students who have graduated in the top half of their high school class and have maintained a minimum 2.75 GPA during their first two years of college. Candidates must meet these criteria to be considered for admission into the program.
There is a separate application process for this program, and requirements for admission may change over time. Students must meet admission requirements current at the time of their final application for admission to the teacher education program.
- Content Knowledge - Demonstrate content knowledge by successfully completing PRAXIS II and the Principles of Learning and Teaching exams.
- Learner and Learning - Demonstrate an appropriate response to diversity in the middle-level classroom by successfully completing two diversity-related assignments.
- Instructional Planning and Practice - Successfully develop and implement an integrated unit of study for middle-level students (grades 4-8).
- Professional Responsibility - Successfully collaborate with families and community members in order to motivate all young adolescents to learn.
CAEP Accreditation
This program is fully accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of
Teacher Education (NCATE), an affiliate of the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). CAEP accreditation is a seal of approval that assures quality in educator preparation.
Accreditation makes sure that educator programs prepare new teachers to know their
subjects, their students, and have the clinical training that allows them to enter
the classroom ready to teach effectively.
