The symposium will be hosted by Dr. Alexandra Zacharella, UAFS director of bands, and will feature guest clinician H. Robert Reynolds, director emeritus of university bands, Arthur Thurnau Emeritus Professor of Music (Conducting) at the University of Michigan.

The symposium will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 16, at the Fort Smith Convention Center - Exhibit Hall A.

During this one-day intensive conducting workshop, participants and observers will participate in score study, rehearsal techniques, ensemble motivation, conducting technique, panel discussion, building relationships, and personal musical growth.

There will be two tracks: participants ($65) and observers ($20 in advance or $25 at the door, PayPal or Venmo only).

  • Participants will have the opportunity to conduct the UAFS Wind Ensemble twice throughout the symposium in one of two selections: Festive Overture - Dimitri Shostakovich (D. Hunsberger trans.) or American Salute - Gound/Lang.
  • Participants will receive direction and feedback from H. Robert Reynolds in discussions about conducting technique, rehearsal technique, score study, ensemble motivation, and more.
  • Observers will have the opportunity to watch and attend conducting, lecture, and discussion sessions in order to develop, refine, and nurture individual conducting and rehearsing techniques through observation, personal note taking, and reflection.
