UAFS Art & Design Welcomes Artist in Residence, Johana Moscoso
Written By: Ian Silvester
The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Art & Design Department welcomes new Artist in Residence, Johana Moscoso, the eighth Windgate-funded Artist in Residence since 2022.
Moscoso’s residency will span both Fall and Spring semesters, providing more opportunities for classroom connections with students. During her residency, Moscoso will develop and execute new work in the Windgate Building, work closely alongside students, and provide mentorship and an example of a professional art career.
“Johana Moscoso’s expertly crafted work has long explored crucial themes of identity, migration, labor, and belonging,” said Dr. Katie Waugh, department head of Art & Design, of Moscoso’s selection. “She is an excellent role model for our students, as her career is defined by her dedication, adaptability, and extraordinary work ethic, while also consistently improving the communities of which she is a part.”
Moscoso arrived at UAFS in November and will introduce her work in a public artist’s talk from 4-5:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Windgate Art and Design Theatre. Moscoso’s residency will conclude with an exhibition in March 2026 at the Don Lee Student Gallery in the Windgate Building.
The UAFS Art & Design Artist in Residence program is made possible by the Windgate Foundation. It features a professional in their respective field who will contribute to the growth and development of the UAFS curriculum. Residents are provided with workspace and access to studios in the Windgate Building, private living accommodations near the campus, travel costs, a $20,000 stipend, and a materials budget.
Moscoso joins the list of previous artists in residence, Pato Hebert, Alex Williamson, Bobby Choe-Henderson, Katina Bitsicas, Katya Grokhovsky, Martin Venezky, and Jessica Elena Aquino.
