Title IX is a federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or educational program receiving federal funds, public or private. It is part of the Education Amendments of 1972 and protects all students and employees.
Title IX states that:
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
The University of Arkansas -Fort Smith Office of Title IX is committed to supporting the University’s mission to serve UAFS students and community. Our office develops and implements best practices for a safe and inclusive environment, free from sex-based discrimination. Title IX also requires institutions of higher education to employ a Title IX Coordinator who oversees compliance. The Title IX Office collaborates with all areas of campus to ensure university policies and programs foster a campus-wide community free of sex-based discrimination and sexual violence. Our office is available for a variety of trainings and encourages campus departments and groups to contact us for general, in-depth, or area-specific trainings.
On this site, there is information about how to stay safe, how to report incidents, rights under Title IX, and resources available. Topics that are addressed include sexual misconduct, sex-based discrimination, sexual harassment, pregnancy and retaliation.
Almost all University of Arkansas – Fort Smith employees are ‘Responsible Employees’ under Title IX. Employees who are not designated as confidential resources are required to report acts of sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating and domestic violence, stalking, sexual exploitation, and retaliation to the Office of Title IX.
