Students Fill Hearts Through Homemade Meals
Written By: Ian Silvester
Nearly a dozen Lions recently gave back to the Fort Smith community by fueling bodies and filling hearts.
“As part of Kappa Alpha, one of the main things we preach is community service and helping with something that is bigger than ourselves,” said Parker Reed, a sophomore business administration major. “When Dr. Lee asked if anyone was able to help cook for the homeless, I knew that I had to help and bring backup.”
Parker, along with seven other members of the Kappa Alpha Order (a fraternity chapter at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith), and an alum, joined Associate Professor of Economics Dr. Bun Lee, his wife, and members of their church on Feb. 7 to help cook and serve meals to the unhoused at the Fort Smith Salvation Army.
Dozens of meals were made and distributed to individuals and families thanks to the group’s efforts.
“I think that it’s very important for students to give back to the community and help others,” Parker explained. “I was inspired to help because something as little as food could help make someone’s day better.”
Parker said when he and the members of his fraternity arrived at the Salvation Army on North Sixth Street in Fort Smith shortly before 2 p.m., there was already a large group of waiting in hopes of a warm dinner.
“Seeing the families with young, hungry children really touched my heart. Knowing that we did something to help them eat filled all our hearts with joy,” he said.
