Chancellor's Message: Mask Requirement Update

Written By: Terisa Riley

Dear Colleagues and Students,

I am thankful to report to you today that our campus COVID case numbers have declined to their lowest point since the Omicron variant raced through our campus and community. With this drastic decline, I am optimistic that the immediate crisis of Omicron has sufficiently dissipated to implement a slow relaxing of COVID protocols.

Today the COVID Emergency Response Team discussed and approved a proposal to return immediately to pre-Omicron masking requirements, wherein masks are required indoors only when a physical distance of six-feet cannot be maintained. Of course, employees, students, and guests may choose to wear masks despite social distancing.

The Emergency Response Team will meet again Monday, March 7, 2022, to review both campus numbers and state numbers to evaluate next steps. It is my sincere hope that cases will continue to decline, and we can safely progress even further toward a return to pre-pandemic normalcy.

Despite this relaxation of mask requirements, all members of the UAFS community are expected to continue symptom monitoring, staying home if they are ill or feverish, and practicing careful hand washing and surface sanitizing.

I appreciate the work of our campus community to mitigate the risks associated with COVID-19. It takes all of us to create a safe campus environment. Thanks for doing your part!

Have a great week!
