UAFS Gallery of Art & Design Open Summer Exhibition
The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Gallery of Art & Design exhibit “Permanent Collection Highlights: Works on Paper” is now open, with free public admission from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday through August 26 at the Windgate Art & Design building on the UAFS campus.
This dynamic selection of works focuses on paper-based mediums, including printmaking, watercolor, drawing, and mixed-media, and includes works by Jo Stealey, John Marin, and Arthur Dove, among many other artists, said Dr. Matthew Bailey, gallery director. Altogether the exhibit includes around 30 works by 25 artists, with origin dates ranging from the 1930s to the present.
The latest addition to the collection is award-winning artist Jo Stealey’s “Exposed.” The show also features works by American modern artists who reached prominence in the early twentieth century, including John Marin and Arthur Dove.
“Stealey is a world-renowned contemporary paper and fiber artist specializing in artist books and installations of handmade paper works, and Dove is one of the first American artists to create works of pure, non-objective abstraction,” said Bailey.
A mixed media print titled “Through My Eyes,” which includes fabric stitching and collage is a particular crowd favorite. Created by Texas-based artist Delita Martin, this work explores African American representation and iconography.
Marin’s “Peach Trees in Blossom,” Dove’s “Riverbank I,” and “The Green Ball,” all three of which are works of abstract landscapes created in watercolor, will be featured as well. The gallery showcases an introductory corridor of landscapes that transcend along each corner into fresh works of contemporary storytelling and vibrant portraits.
