UAFS Mailbag: #RunToTheRoar

Written By: Ian Silvester

Lions,

Across the nation, as students of all ages return to the classroom, following quickly behind the start of the academic year is the start of the fall athletic season. At UAFS, we’re no different.

Whether you are new or returning to UAFS, let me tell you about something called Lion pride or #RunToTheRoar. As a self-proclaimed sports nut, I believe there is nothing quite like cheering on your team while notching a game in the win column. However, I think the ultimate feeling is wearing team gear or colors and cheering with fans right alongside you.

At UAFS, that feeling comes from packing the stands of Stubblefield Center, decked out in navy and white to cheer the Lions on to victory. The first chance to do so at home will be at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22. So, I’m asking each and every one of you to show up, be loud, and support your UAFS volleyball team in their home opener against Lubbock Christian University.

The Lions have started the season with an impressive 6-2 as of writing this and look to defend home court. At the game, take part in UAFS tradition: the “first point.” This is where fans stand and hold their index finger up at the beginning of each set until the Lions score their first point.

Another tradition at UAFS is volleyball posting a winning season, so check out other notable home games. Mark your calendars for Family Weekend on Oct. 6 and 7. Don’t miss the Pink Out game on Oct. 10 when Arkansas Tech comes to town. Honor our military on Nov. 10 and wrap up the regular season with Senior Night on Nov. 11.

But volleyball is just the start of an exciting fall season of sports at UAFS.

Cross-country hit the ground running on Sept. 2 at the City Auto Memphis Twilight Classic. Women’s golf teed off on Sep. 11 in the Northeastern State University (NSU) Invitational at the Indian Springs Golf Club in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. The men’s team begins their season on Sept. 18 at the Muskogee Country Club in Muskogee, Okla., in the men’s NSU Invitational.

Tennis starts with the men’s team competing in the ITA Central Regional Tournament on Sept. 15 (men) and Sept. 22 (women).

Athletics are a fun part of the college experience. Standing shoulder to shoulder with your fellow students and cheering for the Lions is an experience you won’t want to miss. Every home game or match is free for students, so grab your tickets today and remember to #RunToTheRoar!

If there is a topic you'd like to see covered, or a question answered, email communications@uafs.edu for a future UAFS Mailbag.

Until next time,

Ian
