UAFS Student Wins Competition at Spanish Symposium

Gaby Hernandez Donato, a UAFS senior Spanish major, won the Poster Presentation competition at the Sin Limites Spanish and L2 Teachers Symposium on April 1.

Gaby, who expects to graduate in December, researched and reported on gender violence in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. She learned that even with the laws that are in place, “there is still an alarming rate of violence and femicides throughout, as a well as a lack of resources to protect the victims.”

Discussing the symposium, Gaby noted that both the research and the presentation were learning experiences for her.

“I gained great knowledge on the topic that I researched …, but at the same time, I made lots of connections who I am now partnering with to further investigate and present my topic to different groups and organizations,” she said.

Gaby said she plans to pursue a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. She describes her choice to attend UAFS as “the best decision I made, and I couldn’t see myself anywhere else.”

“The connections and relationships I have made and continue to make are lifelong, and the faculty here has been beyond amazing when it comes to helping with anything,” she said.

UAFS Students, graduate students, and second-language and English as a Second Language teachers from area secondary schools, colleges, and universities attended the symposium.
