Summer registration is now open at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, according to Penny Pendleton of Fort Smith, dean of enrollment management.

The first summer term begins June 3 with five-week and some 10-week enrollment options. The second summer term starts on July 8. In most cases, classes meet Monday through Thursday.

“We have several types of people who register for summer classes,” Pendleton said. “Our current students use summer classes as an excellent way to get ahead with their academic studies or lighten their fall and spring academic load. As for high school students, they use summer classes to get a head start on their college career.”

Pendleton said that some students seek to broaden their education while others come to take summer courses at UAFS with the intentions of transferring credits back to their home university.

Zack Johnson of Fort Smith attended high school in Muldrow and has decided to register for summer classes to start his college career.

“I plan to go into military intelligence,” Johnson said. “These classes will help me do that.” Johnson said he ultimately wants to earn a degree in psychology.

Johnson worked with Monica Moore of Fort Smith, professional adviser in Student Advisement and Career Planning, to start the registration process. Moore said that some students, like Johnson, register for summer classes to get a feel for college life when the campus is not as busy or crowded as it is during the fall and spring semesters.

New students may apply online at www.uafs.edu prior to visiting with an admissions officer to help them through the admissions process. Moore said that choosing to enroll for summer school now is the perfect time to gear up for college classes during the summer months. She said that, although some classes are filled because current students have already enrolled for the summer, many options still remain available.

Fall registration for transfer and returning students with 13 credit hours or more has already begun. New, transfer and returning students with 12 hours or less must register for fall classes during new student orientation programs throughout the summer.

The Admissions and School Relations Office is located on the second floor of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays. The class schedule is available on the UAFS website under Academic Quicklinks.

For more information call the admissions office at 479-788-7120 or 1-888-512-5466 or visit academics.uafs.edu/nso/new-student-orientation.
