Two high school students earned prizes and a third earned recognition from the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith after they placed in a high school artwork competition at the university.

 

Michelle Nguyen of Southside High School won first place, notching her a $1,000 scholarship, while Francisco Arujo of Springdale High School won second and received a $200 honorarium. Chris Do of Union Christian Academy was named honorable mention.

 

The three were recognized at a reception April 19 for the competition’s art exhibit, which featured their artworks along with nearly 30 other entrants into the competition, which was sponsored by the Chancellor’s Coalition for the Visual Arts at UAFS.

 

Students were able to submit two-dimensional works including painting, drawing, design, printmaking, mixed media and photography. Entries were judged on use of design elements and principles, craftsmanship, and quality of concept and expression.

 

The exhibit will continue to be on display through April 28. Exhibit hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Fridays. For more information about the exhibit, contact the UAFS Box Office at 479-788-7300.
