One Pill Can Kill Training Comes to UAFS

Written By: Ian Silvester

The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith is set to host One Pill Can Kill Training on Monday, Oct. 6. The initiative, headed by Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin, is a statewide effort to educate college students about the deadly risks of fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills.

The training, held in the Reynolds Room inside the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center, begins at noon. It will provide awareness of the growing threat, educate on overdose signs and how to use naloxone, commonly referred to as Narcan, and empower attendees to protect themselves and others.

UAFS has amplified its efforts to combat the opioid crisis through educational and training programs led by University Police Chief Ray Ottman. The university also has two vending machines on campus that dispense Narcan for free, in addition to having every building equipped with an opioid rescue kit near entrances or elevators. Read more about the university’s efforts here.

Opioid-related awareness and overdose prevention are crucial for saving lives. The One Pill Can Kill initiative is aimed at helping students make informed choices, to recognize the danger in unknowingly taking fake pills and assuming they are safe, and to start life-saving conversations.

Those attending will leave with a Fentanyl Harm Prevention Kit, which includes:

  • Naloxone (Narcan)
  • Fentanyl test strip
  • Gloves for safe handling
  • Safe drug disposal bag
  • Pill identification card to identify legitimate medications

Students, faculty, and staff can register for the event to receive a lunch and a free t-shirt at https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=TUi1FgcihkO6sXmbZn9ANBOAUCBKCx9Lv7RdOS6MqJZUMzI5U0pMVkRYM1E2ODA0UEhKWjg5MVFLSS4u&origin=QRCode.
