Dr. Martin McDonell, director of the social work program at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith, has been named to the Arkansas State Independent Living Council by Gov. Asa Hutchinson.

 

McDonell, who came to UAFS in August, will serve on the board through Feb. 1, 2019. His appointment replaces previous board member Robyn Horn.

 

As board member, McDonell will collaborate with the Centers for Independent Living to provide services to those with disabilities, enabling them to live more independently in their community. Those services include information and referrals, peer support, and independent living skills training and advocacy.

 

McDonell said he is honored for the opportunity to serve on the board and to assist those with developmental disabilities.

 

“Any opportunity to serve at the state level is a fantastic opportunity to give back and conduct service to the community,” McDonell said. “I am excited to represent the university in this endeavor.”

 

McDonell holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from San Diego State University, a master’s degree in social work from California State University – Long Beach, and a doctorate degree in social work from the University of Utah.  

 

The Arkansas State Independent Living Council is an education, advocacy, and referral agency that works to provide information to Arkansans about the Independent Living Philosophy, civil rights, technology and services. The council’s mission is to promote independence including freedom of choice and full inclusion into the mainstream of society for all Arkansans with all types of disabilities. The council’s Board of Directors is comprised of Governor-appointed Arkansans, the majority of which have disabilities.
