With three degrees in geography, Dr. Toni Alexander finds herself most at home within colleges of arts and sciences, where natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities intersect. As a first-generation college graduate, she recognizes how her own experiences as a student and faculty member at regional comprehensive universities have changed not only her life but those of her family and community. Prior to her arrival at UAFS, she served as chair of the Departments of History and Anthropology and Modern Languages, Anthropology, and Geography at Southeast Missouri State (SEMO) for 10 years. She previously held the position of tenured associate professor and associate chair for geography at Auburn University in Alabama. Across institutions she has been formally recognized for her commitment to teaching, scholarship, and service. Throughout her career as an academic leader, she has valued open and collegial communication, fiscal responsibility and transparency, and supporting leadership development opportunities for her students, faculty, and peers.

Dr. Alexander firmly believes that an academic leader must not only be embedded within the campus environment but also an active citizen in the surrounding community. Doing so also reminds students graduating from an institution that their education opens not only career possibilities, but also a responsibility to give back to the communities they call home. Now a resident of Fort Smith, she looks forward to actively contributing to the local community.
