From WATC to Welder

It isn’t every day when the lightbulb clicks on as if by magic, shining a light on the perfect career path. But for Clayton Moellers, that’s exactly how it happened. Nearly five years ago, as a freshman in high school, the opportunity to take Welding classes at UAFS caught his eye. Now, he is a little more than a month away from graduating with an associate of applied science degree and launching his welding career.

Clayton enrolled in the Western Arkansas Technical Center (WATC) welding program his senior year of high school and after completing a full year of college credit at no cost while in high school, he enrolled as an undergraduate student to finish his studies.

“It’s already paying off, I have the opportunity to get out into the field a lot quicker,” explained Clayton. “In fact, I’m going to go work full-time at Multi-Craft Contractors.”

Less than eight weeks away from graduation, this 19-year-old welder already has a job waiting for him outside the classroom.

Not willing to boast about his skills as a welder, Clayton said he owes it all to the professors and instructors at UAFS.

“They care about the education that they’re giving you, and they know their stuff enough to teach you and push you out into the field ready and able to succeed,” Clayton said.

Although he’s passionate about welding, Clayton also reminds his peers that there are many fields within the fabrication industry, and if welders want to up their certifications, UAFS can help.

From automotive to robotics to welding, students like Clayton can find their professional home at UAFS. Are you or your high school student interested in a technical career? Check out the incredible programs we offer through WATC and our College of Business and Industry today!
