UAFS First Time Hosting the Annual Fields of Faith.

Written By: Kolby McGee

Under the bright lights of Crowder Field on Wednesday, October 11, dozens of Fort Smith residents joined together for the annual Fields of Faith event. Though the event typically alternates locations between Fort Smith’s Northside and Southside high schools, the year marked a commitment to coming together on the neutral ground of the River Valley’s university – UAFS.

Fields of Faith events, hosted by the national organization Fellowship of Christian Athletes, occur across the country on the second Wednesday of October. Regional FCA groups, called huddles, exist at k-12 schools, colleges and universities across the U.S., the UAFS huddle was revived this fall.

The event, held on a cool fall evening under a perfect sunset, brought jr. high, high school, and college students from the River Valley together to worship and listen to the testimonies of fellow Christian believers. The event kicked off with a grilled dinner provided by the UAFS Baptist Campus Ministries. Following dinner, students played lawn games before heading down to the field where praise and worship music guided the event.

Three speakers, including UAFS Baseball player Mikey Brinton, gave their testimonies and shared their faith with those in attendance. Mikey talked about how he struggled early in life to do what was right and accept his calling, but said as he grew in his faith, he found it was easier to be who he was supposed to be.

Sydney Barnes, a leader of the UAFS FCA huddle, said “Fields of Faith exceeded my expectations. It was so amazing to see how many people from around the River Valley showed up and how our campus ministries are becoming one big ministry for Jesus!”

Organizers were thrilled about the turn out for the university’s first time hosting. “The message I want people to get from Fields of Faith is that we are all equal and no matter how different our lives look, God loves us all the same,” said Sydney.

Students interested in joining the newly formed UAFS huddle can contact: Tyson Simon or MIkey Brinton.
