Cole Goodman, M.D., president, Mercy Clinic Fort Smith Communities, will visit UAFS for a lecture at noon Friday, Jan. 25, in room 101 of the UAFS Math-Science Building, located at 720 N. 49th St.
Dr. Goodman will address faculty and students on the rapidly changing pace in the health care industry and the importance of higher education in preparing students to pursue careers in continuously advancing healthcare fields.
The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be given in conjunction with the recruitment office of the UAMS Regional Campus in Fort Smith, which aims to address the growing need for health care professionals in rural Arkansas by identifying students who have an interest in medical careers and helping to solidify that interest.
“Dr. Goodman is sure to inspire us all with his contributions to, not only the health care industry, but to the broader community,” said Jeff Shaver, Ph.D., associate professor of biology and biology education at UAFS.
Since 1978, Dr. Goodman has been on the staff of Mercy Medical Center and has served as Chief of Surgery at Sparks Regional Medical Center and Mercy Fort Smith. He earned his M.D. from UAMS and also holds a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.
“Dr. Goodman's visit is important and timely because the needs of the health care industry are rapidly changing. To keep up with these changes as a university, we need to continuously look to, and work with, our industry and community partners to graduate students with the knowledge and skills needed to be competitive and contributing members of our health care workforce and beyond,” said Shaver.
This presentation kicks off the spring 2019 College of STEM’s Seminar Series, which aims to expose and engage UAFS students, faculty, staff, and the community to cutting-edge, topical issues in the fields of STEM and education.
Launched in fall 2016, the Seminar Series – which takes place at noon on Fridays – brings STEM and education professionals from around the country and across the state to present in their fields and meet individually with UAFS faculty and students.
“The Seminar Series also serves as a forum for UAFS faculty, staff and students to share their research and expertise,” said Dr. Ron Darbeau, dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
“Through the seminars UAFS faculty forge and maintain vibrant collaborations with external colleagues, while our students are exposed not only to issues relevant to their fields of study, but also to the art of presentation,” added Darbeau.
