Students Get Jump Start on Jobs at All-Majors Career Fair

Written By: Ian Silvester

Students and alumni got a head start on finding a career during the All-Majors Career Fair held by the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith on Oct. 29.

More than 180 Lions dressed for success, brought resumes, and networked with more than 40 area organizations. Susan Krafft, executive director of the Babb Center for Career Services, said she was pleased with the participation in the fall event and noted that many businesses call it their favorite recruiting event.

“Our staff wants to continue to give our Lions the advantage when it comes to seeking employment in this competitive job market. We encourage students and alumni to come see us (Babb Center for Career Services) for resume review, interview prep, and job search assistance anytime,” Krafft said.

The All-Majors Career Fair gave students, like senior criminal justice student Fatima Jaimes, the opportunity to meet employers in person. As a first-generation, online student, Fatima said this was her first career fair and appreciated the university’s efforts to help her discover what could come next.

“I’ve been looking into becoming a criminal investigator, so I talked to the police department. … They told me after a year of being a patrol officer, I can start applying for jobs as a criminal investigator, and that felt good to hear,” Fatima said.

Some students, like Fatima, had one company in mind to visit; others, like first-year business administration major Gregory Roane, were eager to make connections with multiple businesses.

“I’ve talked to about eight or 10 different companies,” Gregory said, noting that he got to meet the hiring managers for two businesses he already had interviews scheduled with.

As a non-traditional student, Gregory spoke fondly of the event being open to all students, not just those closer to graduation.

“It’s great because it gives younger students a chance to visualize what the experience is like, maybe get some feedback, and maybe work on some things so they’ll be more prepared,” he said. “For myself, it makes my drive that much stronger. If I were able to find a career or a company that I could work really well with and be in school getting the tools and knowledge before my degree, it would be nice.”
