Summer can be a time to have fun and a time to learn for one-year-old children up through college-age students who register for classes and camps offered on the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith campus.

 

Activities cover music, sports, art and theatre. Some have limited enrollment, and all classes or camps have specific age or grade-level requirements. The 2013 summer activities are offered through the Music Department, the Athletic Department and the Academy of the Arts.

 

The schedule includes:

 

May 28-29: Volleyball Individual Skills Camp for girls in grades 7-12, conducted by UAFS volleyball coach Jane Sargent, will be held May 28-29 in Stubblefield Center. The first session will focus on hitting and blocking and will be from 4-6 p.m. The second session will focus on setting and passing and will be from 6-8 p.m. Cost is $40 per camper per session. May 28-Aug. 3: Private music lessons in piano, voice and instrumental music are offered through the Academy of the Arts. Five- and 10-week options are available for 30-, 45- or 60-minute weekly lessons. Fees vary by length of session. Call Sarah Taylor at 479-788-7253.

 

June 3-7: Junior High Band Camp is for students in grades 6-9 and meets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 3-7. Commuter fee is $170 and includes lunch every day. Registration deadline is May 28. June 5-7: The first of three Basketball Shooting Camps for Girls, conducted by UAFS women’s basketball coach Louis Whorton, will be held from 9 a.m.-noon June 5-7 in Stubblefield Center and is for girls in grades 3-8. The camp consists of all phases of shooting the basketball. Each player will be videotaped and critiqued by the coaching staff, and each camper will learn 10 shooting drills they will be able to use at home. Cost is $80 per camper and includes a camp T-shirt. June 10-14: Art Camp for grades 1-5, conducted by Stephanie Gean, is offered through the Academy of the Arts from 9 a.m.-noon daily. Fee is $175. Call Sarah Taylor at 479-788-7253 for more information.

 

June 10-14: Brass Camp is for students in grades 9-12 and undergraduate college brass students who play trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba. Camp meets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 10-14. Fees are $180 for commuters (includes daily lunch) and $350 for residential students (includes meals and housing). Registration deadline is June 3. June 11-July 9: Preschool Musikgarten for ages 1-5 will be held June 11-July 9. The music and movement classes meet weekly with certified instructor Alice Sanders. Fee is $60-$75, depending on the student’s age.  Call Sarah Taylor at 479-788-7253 for more information.

 

June 12-14: The first Basketball Individual Skills Camp for boys entering grades 1-9, conducted by UAFS men’s basketball coach Josh Newman, will be held from 9 a.m.-noon June 12-14. Focus will be on the fundamentals of shooting, ball-handling, passing, defense and rebounding. Cost is $80 per camper and includes a T-shirt and certificate of participation. June 17-19: Individual Volleyball Camp for girls, conducted by UAFS volleyball coach Jane Sargent, is slated for June 17-19, with a 9 a.m.-noon session for girls in grades K-7th grade and a 1-4 p.m. session for girls in grades 8-12. June 19-21: The Arkansas Clarinet Workshop is for junior high school through college clarinet students and educators. June 24-28: Jazz Band Camp is for students in grades 9-12 who play "jazz band" instruments. Camp meets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 24-28. Fees are $180 for commuters and $350 for residential students. June 25-26: A Basketball Elite Camp for boys entering grades 6-12, conducted by UAFS men’s basketball coach Josh Newman, will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. June 25 and 8:30-11 a.m. June 26. at Stubblefield Center. The camp will focus on improving fundamental skills through a college practice format and implementing those skills in 5-on-5 games. Cost is $80 for overnight campers and includes two meals, housing and T-shirt and $50 for commuter campers and includes a T-shirt. July 22-27: Musical Theatre Performance Camp -- Broadway in Review will meet July 22-27, with ages 8-14 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and ages 5-7 from 1-4 p.m. Students will sing, dance and act as they prepare scenes from the best of Broadway, culminating in a performance on July 27.
