Lion's Den FAQs

Do I have to live on campus during my first year?

UAFS doesn't require incoming first-year students to live on campus. The benefits of living on campus, however, lead many students to choose university housing.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

All residents will need to pay a $200 deposit while living in the Lion's Den. This deposit is due at the time the contract is signed and will be held until the student moves out of campus housing at which time it will be released to the student's account. If there are charges still on the student's account, the deposit will cover those fees. If the fees are more than $200, the student will be required to pay the remaining balance. If there are no fees on the account, the deposit will be refunded. Either the amount will be direct deposited to the bank account the student has previously set up with the university or a check will be mailed to the student.

What is included in each suite?

All suites come with loftable furniture, which includes: an Extra-Long Twin Bed, Desk and Desk Chair, Dresser, Pedestal with Lock, and Wardrobe.

What is loftable furniture?

Loftable furniture can be customized by the resident. For instance, the bed can be raised and the desk put beneath it.

What bills do I need to pay?

A resident must pay for a meal plan, room, and deposit.

What does my room bill cover?

Housing does not operate to make a profit. Instead, the room fee goes directly back into the maintenance, improvement, and expansion of campus housing. While this list is not all-inclusive and does not provide exact percentages or amounts, we want residents to trust that their "room rent" is being used wisely. Your room bill covers all utilities for your room and the facility, sanitation services, staff salaries, maintenance expenses for both the room and overall facility, building construction debt, laundry services, pest control, fire inspection services, cleaning supplies, and furnishings. Unfortunately, the cost of all this increases each year, which is why housing rates generally increase annually.

Is there a place to do laundry?

The Lion's Den has a laundry center on the first floor of each building that is open 24/7. These washers and dryers are for residents only.

Is there security?

The Lion's Den has an extensive video surveillance system and limited entry via card key access. UPD and Residential Life staff regularly patrol the buildings.

Is there a place to study at the Lion's Den?

If you want a different atmosphere than your room, each floor of the Lion's Den offers common areas that may be used for studying. Also, Boreham Library is less than 100 yards away.

Is there a fitness center?

The Recreation and Wellness Center (RAWC) is located on campus and available to all students registered in classes at UAFS.

What is a Living Learning Community?

In a Living Learning Community (LLC), students with similar interests live on the same floor of the Lion's Den during their first year of college. A student opting to participate in an LLC will receive a $1,000 housing scholarship for participating. There are currently LLCs for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) majors, business majors, honors program participants, and students interested in developing their leadership talents. Click here for more information on LLCs.
