Learn to sail a boat and cook with a chef at the same place you can discover holistic healing strategies and learn to use a computer -- the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith.

These skills and others will be available as part of the fall schedule of the Center for Lifelong Learning at UAFS, according to Jeff Adams of Fort Smith, CLL director. The Center for Lifelong Learning offers a variety of non-credit lectures, short-term classes and tours to fill a wide range of interests.

“One of our new classes is sailing,” said Adams, “and participants will learn to sail with hands-on and classroom-based instruction. The class includes sailing a 23-foot yacht on Kerr Reservoir.” The “Learn to Sail” class meets in October.

Adams said chef Jason Haid from River City Deli will conduct a cooking class in October and introduce those who sign up to the basics of “great creations in the kitchen.”

Also new on the fall schedule are several arts and crafts classes, including ones in encaustics, jewelry making and silk tie dying, with start dates all through the fall.

“We will also have a knitting class for men starting in September,” said Adams. “Not only will participants see the benefits of aiding manual dexterity, helping with stress relief and providing comradeship, they will have the respect of home-ec teachers everywhere.”

Beginning-level computer classes to assist students with keyboard skills will be provided at additional days and times this fall, beginning in September. Another new class will provide the history of beer making in Arkansas and Oklahoma. It starts in October.

“We plan to have the fall brochure in the mail around the second week in July,” said Adams. “Anyone who wants to be on our mailing list needs to call us at 479-788-7220 or email an address to us at cll@uafs.edu. We believe we have a great semester planned and look forward to providing more than 100 learning opportunities for the community during the fall semester.”
