Our highly acclaimed graphic design program combines the broad fundamentals of design with the technical skills necessary to be successful in this highly competitive field.

UAFS is your first step in becoming a successful graphic designer. Graphic design students receive hands-on instruction in a professional studio environment with small classes to help develop a strong sense of community among students and faculty. The curriculum is tailored to train well-rounded designers who are able to work with a variety of clients in different situations. Our graduates are trained in interactive and mobile design, user experience design, strategic branding, typography, publication design, packaging, illustration, and image making. With a strong beginning in foundations courses followed by an admissions portfolio review and coursework in studio art & art history, the UAFS graphic design program ensures students are prepared for their careers.

B.A. in Studio Art
UAFS is your first step to a successful future in visual art. With a strong beginning in foundations courses followed by an admissions portfolio review, the UAFS studio art program provides students advanced study in drawing, painting, printmaking, digital photography, letterpress, and book arts.

Minors

Studio Art
The minor in studio art offers you a chance to broaden your academic experiences through a structured selection of beginning and advanced-level studio art and art history courses. Studying studio art provides hands-on experience in producing art and builds your abilities in visual communication.

Art History
In an increasingly visual world, art history provides necessary skills in examining and analyzing works of art throughout the span of history. This 18-hour program provides entry to this engaging, multi-disciplinary field and prepares you for further study in art history while enhancing any major or career path with connections to history, culture, and communication.

The UAFS graphic design program boasts a high job placement rate. You are surrounded by the work of graphic designers. From the artwork featured on your morning coffee cup to the digital design of this website, graphic designers work with both text and imagery to effectively convey message and emotion. According to the Bureau of Labor Statics, the annual median wage for graphic designers in 2022 was $57,990.

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Science in graphic design, the student will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly implement design processes.
  • Create user-targeted visual communication by identifying connections between design processes, audience behavior, and values.
  • Employ a variety of media in the development of visual communication, understanding the relationship between design principles, material, intent, and results.
  • Understand basic principles of design and have the technical proficiency to visually communicate using design media.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of global art and design history through written and verbal communication.
