Academic Progress, Restriction, and Suspension

The purpose for establishing standards of satisfactory academic progress is to identify students whose progress toward degree or certificate completion is below average in terms of grade point average. The intent is to provide assistance to raise the GPA to an acceptable standard for graduation.

A student must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 to maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Evaluation will be made at the end of each fall, spring, and summer term to determine the student’s progress for GPA requirements and academic standing (see below for the categories of academic standing).

Returning and concurrent students will retain the academic standing they earned at the end of their last semester at UAFS.

For repeated UAFS courses, all grades are computed in the cumulative GPA unless exclusion of grade is requested by the student as outlined in the UAFS grade replacement policy. An IP (In Progress) grade is not calculated into the GPA until the end of the contract period.

Terms

Students who have an institutional cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher are in academic good standing.

Academic Notice while in Good Standing
Students will be given Academic Notice if their institutional cumulative GPA is between 2.0 - 2.24 at the end of a term (Fall, Spring, or Summer). Students given Academic Notice are considered in good academic standing but will receive academic support and interventions.

Students will be placed on Academic Restriction if their institutional cumulative GPA drops below 2.0.

While on Academic Restriction, students will be:

  • Required to enroll in UNIV 02001 - Bridge To Success Seminar in the first term of restriction.
  • Required to meet with their professional academic advisor to review academic restriction, suspension, and recovery policies.
  • Limited to no more than 15 credit hours in fall and spring semesters and nine hours in summer.

Students will remain on Academic Restriction as long as their institutional cumulative GPA remains below 2.0, even if their semester GPA is above 2.0.

Students placed on Academic Restriction after their first semester may appeal to the Academic Standing Appeals Committee to have their individual circumstances reviewed.

Academic Restriction for Transfer Students
New or returning students who have recently transferred from another institution and have a cumulative GPA below 2.0 must appeal for admission. If admission is granted, the student will enter on Academic Restriction. Students with this standing may have specific enrollment requirements and must make a 2.0 GPA their first semester or be moved to suspension.

First-time entering students with concurrent transfer coursework below 2.0 will be admitted on Academic Restriction.

Students will be placed on Academic Suspension if, while on Academic Restriction, they do not achieve both a 2.00 semester GPA and a 2.00 institutional cumulative GPA.

Students placed on Academic Suspension will be prevented from registering for courses at UAFS for two full semesters (Fall and Spring) and must reapply for admission if they return after suspension.

Students may appeal this suspension to the Academic Standing Appeals Committee. Students who successfully appeal their Academic Suspension will return on Academic Restriction and be subject to the same requirements as any student on Academic Restriction.

Any student returning to UAFS after being suspended will be placed on Academic Dismissal if they do not maintain satisfactory academic progress (semester GPA over 2.0). If satisfactory academic progress is achieved, students will continue on Academic Restriction until their cumulative GPA is 2.0 or higher.

Students may appeal dismissal to the Academic Standing Appeals Committee. Dismissal is permanent unless readmission is granted by the Academic Standing Appeals Committee.

The policies related to academic restriction and suspension are separate and distinct from those related to financial aid warning and suspension. Each appeal is reviewed by its own separate committee. Students with a semester or cumulative GPA below 2.00, who intend to utilize financial aid grants or loans, should visit with the Financial Aid Office.
