Finals Prep Event Returns, but with New Name

Written By: Ian Silvester

The fall semester at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith came to an end with the emergence of a new to prepare students for finals through a myriad of sessions aimed at tutoring and stress release.

Now, the Long Night Against Procrastination returns to end the year, but with a new name: The Long Night of Preparation. After successfully helping nearly 150 students in the fall, organizers were eager to bring the event back to campus, but with a few additions.

Student Success Librarian Karen Haggard was behind bringing the Long Night Against Procrastination to UAFS in the fall. Of the changes made, she said she was inspired by the energy and excitement other organizers demonstrated to bring back this event to support students.

“I love the way it’s morphed from Long Night Against Procrastination to Long Night of Preparation. I’m excited to see how our students will use the event to finish strong,” Haggard shared.

The Long Night of Preparation will take place from 4-9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, throughout the Boreham Library. The event is a collaboration among academic, student-centric services across UAFS, such as the Boreham Library, Academic Success Center, the UAFS Writing Center, Student Support Services (TRIO), and the Babb Center for Career Services.

During the Long Night of Preparation, students will be able to take advantage of eight “Ps” to prepare for finals: Pizza, Popsicles, Popcorn, Puzzles, Project work, Prizes, Professors and Puppies, and Ptutoring – the “P” is silent.

UAFS Writing Center Director Dr. Mary Lutze explained that after the fall event, organizers like her wanted to see professors have a more prominent role in future endeavors. As a result, they came up with “Professors and Puppies.”

“(It’s) a chance for students to ask questions of their professors in after-hours office hours,” Lutze said. “The best part is that those professors will have their puppies with them for much-needed cuddles and stress relief before finals.”

Students can take advantage of quiet study spaces available during the entire event, but those looking to shake things up can take advantage of an evening filled with ways to ease test worries, pick up study skills, ask questions, and fuel the body and brain.
