Welcome to UAFS
A message from the Dean of Students
Dear UAFS Students,
Welcome to the 2026-27 academic year at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith! We are thrilled that you have chosen to pursue your degree with us. My hope for you this year is to invest in your academic success, grow personally, and engage thoughtfully in university life.
You will find our faculty to be exceptional and approachable. They are ready to assist and mentor dedicated students. I encourage you to seek out challenging and rewarding academic experiences, such as study abroad programs and the annual Student Research Symposium. If you ever find yourself struggling academically, don’t hesitate to ask for help. You can utilize faculty office hours, visit the Gordon Kelley Academic Success Center, and use the Writing Center on campus to support your academic journey.
At UAFS, learning continues outside the classroom. I strongly encourage you to get involved in co-curricular programs. With over 100 Registered Student Organizations, you’re sure to find something that piques your interest. Our Fraternity and Sorority Life is robust, vibrant, and centered around strong values. Additionally, our Student Government Association is made up of dedicated student leaders collaborating to enhance the overall student experience. I also invite you to participate in on-campus activities, which are free and a lot of fun! Our award-winning Campus Activities Board has organized numerous exciting programs for you this academic year, ensuring there is always something happening at UAFS.
Don’t miss out on the high-quality cultural, musical, and theatrical performances we offer at UAFS. Our athletic programs are competitive and provide an enjoyable fan experience in the student section. Whether you’re a new Lion or a seasoned member of the Pride, I encourage you to commit yourself to academic excellence, campus involvement, and service to others. Remember, you have the power to shape your future. Make wise choices, stay open-minded, and enjoy everything UAFS has to offer!
All the best,
Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students

A message from the SGA President
Welcome to the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith!
My name is Carson Newton, and it is my honor to serve as your Student Body President. No matter where you are coming from, UAFS will bring opportunities for you to grow as a person. College will challenge you in many positive ways. This campus will soon become a place of discovery, resilience, and personal growth, not just in what you learn, but in who you become. College is a huge milestone. This step comes with lots of emotions.
Excitement, curiosity, nerves, and probably some homesickness too. You are not the first student to come to UAFS with emotions, questions, and a little doubt. Your life is about to change and that’s a good thing. UAFS will bring you so many opportunities that you never would have expected. I urge you to press forward; the experiences ahead of you are worth it.
At UAFS, you will receive more than just an education. You’ll meet lifelong friends, build connections with professors and mentors, and find many opportunities to advance your career beyond a diploma.
I want to challenge you all to make the most of your college experience. Ask questions when you have them, introduce yourself to your professors, join an organization on campus, meet lots of new people, show up to your fullest, expand your understanding of the world, and become a better version of yourself.
When you arrive on campus this fall, your voice matters. You are now part of a community that is stronger because you are here. All of us here at UAFS are cheering you on already. Here’s to a new chapter, big ambitions, and the unforgettable memories ahead.
With Lion pride,
President of the Student Government Association
