Terms to Know
When it comes to academic advising, registering for classes, changing your schedule, and withdrawing from the university, there are many terms that may seem unfamiliar or confusing. Use this page as a reference to understanding these terms.
- Academic Calendar: The academic calendar is your source for important dates related to your academic career at UAFS. It is compiled and published by the UAFS Registrar's Office.
- Academic Catalog: The Academic Catalog is the comprehensive guide to the university’s academic programs, policies, course descriptions, and more. This is updated for each academic year to reflect changes, new policies, practices, or changes to academic programs.
- Academic Plan: A specific list of courses that a student and their advisor agree are the best order for them to complete the program of study (major)
- Saved Schedule: The specific course sections (including dates and times) that a student would like to take. Students can save this schedule and then register with a few quick clicks.
- Corequisite: Two courses or a set of requirements that are meant to be taken together in a single semester. Example: GEOL 23131 – Minerals and Rocks Laboratory and GEOL 23143 – Mineral and Rocks
- Prerequisite: A course that is meant to be taken prior to another course. Example: Composition I should be taken prior to taking Composition II
- Academic Progress: Area in Workday that lists the requirements for a program of study and student’s progress toward their degree. All requirements that have been met and still need to be met are listed.
- Program of Study: An area of study in which a student specializes while working toward a college degree. Commonly called a major. Example: Majoring in chemistry.
- Onboarding: Series of required tasks prior to meeting with an academic advisor. Includes confirming contact information, agreeing to the university’s terms and conditions, and updating the student’s preferred name.
- Waitlist: When a course reaches the maximum enrollment capacity, it will no longer be open for registration but will then have a waitlist. This list is the group of students who would like to be registered for that section of the course. If seats become available in that course section, the students on the waitlist will be notified and given the option to enroll. Ex: A section of English has a capacity of 20. The 21st student who registers will be given the option
- Registration Appointment: The date and time a student is able to register for their classes based on their priority registration status. Found in the Academics Hub of Workday.
- Priority Registration: Registration is based on the number of credit hours earned. Certain groups register first, then seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen
- Hold: Holds act as a flag on a student account that requires action and/or prevents access to registration for classes. Ex: Onboarding Hold, Advising Hold, Past Due Balance Hold
- Workday: UAFS student information system and the UA System-wide platform that contains students’ personal, academic, and financial records. Students will use Workday to register for classes, view grades, maintain personal information, view financial aid and student account balance, and track progress towards their degree.
- Navigate: An online tool that allows students to easily communicate with faculty and their success team as well as provides a convenient way to schedule appointments with advisors, faculty, and student support departments. Students can also log in and see their class schedule, mid-term and final grades, and notes regarding advising and other student support areas.
- My.UAFS: A student dashboard that provides a central location for access to university systems and communications, campus resources, online services, appeal forms, and academic information.
