Challenge Exams

In courses for which no CLEP examination is available, UAFS may grant credit on the basis of examinations administered by the department in which the credit is to be awarded. A challenge exam can be taken only by admitted UAFS students with department approval and after payment of the challenge exam fee. If a specific course is not listed in the CLEP section of this catalog, a student may contact the department chair of the course to determine if a challenge exam is appropriate and available.

Challenge exams can be taken only before the student enrolls in the course, with the exception of FIN 1521 - Personal Finance Applications and ITA 1003 - Computer Applications For The Knowledge Worker. The challenge exams for these courses can be taken during the first week the course is taught.

Students who plan to complete a challenge exam should contact the UAFS Financial Aid Department to discuss how the credit will affect financial aid and scholarships. Credit earned via challenge exams does not count as hours earned for federal financial aid and the Arkansas Challenge Scholarship. Credit earned is posted as CR credit and does not count towards a student's GPA.

Per UAFS policy, challenge exams are available to students who have not previously attempted a course or those who are attempting the course for the first time. If you have taken ITA 1003 in a previous semester and failed or withdrew, then you are ineligible to challenge. A score of 70 percent or better is required to successfully challenge. You can only attempt to challenge ONE time.

How to Register

We recommend that you first contact your academic advisor to determine if the ITA 1003 Exam is appropriate and available.

  1. Complete the Challenge Exam Registration Form and email it to Lisa Cady for approval. Keep a copy for your records. After you have received approval from Lisa Cady, you may register and pay for your exam.
  2. Schedule and pay for your ITA Exam. After registering and paying, email a copy of your confirmation page to Lisa Cady. She will then email you further instructions for accessing the Cengage area and practice.
  3. After your exam is completed, email Lisa Cady so she can retrieve your grade. After your exam is completed, the form will be notated with your grade, signed by the department head, and sent to the UAFS Registrar's Office.
  4. At the time of your exam, bring a current photo ID and your completed ITA Challenge Exam registration form to the ASC.
  5. If the exam is passed, contact your academic advisor for instructions on dropping ITA 1003 before the deadline (fifth day of class) to receive a full refund.
