702.4 - Portable Heater Policy
1. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure the safe, efficient, and appropriate use of portable space heaters within the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith (UAFS) buildings while maintaining compliance with fire safety regulations and minimizing energy consumption.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all UAFS faculty, staff, and students who work, study, or reside on campus. It excludes the use of space heaters in university housing, where they are prohibited.
3. Policy Statement
Space heaters pose potential fire hazards and may interfere with HVAC system performance. The use of personal space heaters is restricted and must comply with the following guidelines:
3.1 General Provisions
- Prohibited in Residence Halls: Space heaters are not allowed in any student housing facilities, including the Lion’s Den and other residential buildings.
- Permissible Use in Offices: Space heaters may be used in individual office spaces only when:
- Approved in writing by Facilities Management
- The HVAC system cannot maintain a comfortable temperature
- Device Requirements: Approved space heaters must:
- Be UL (Underwriters Laboratories) listed
- Have automatic tip-over shut-off and overheat protection
- Be electric only (no fuel-powered or open flame heaters)
- Draw no more than 1,500 watts
- Be plugged directly into a wall outlet (no extension cords or power strips)
- Usage Requirements:
- Turn off and unplug when unattended
- Maintain at least 3 feet clearance from combustible materials
- Do not block exits, walkways, or vents
- Inspections:
- Facilities or EH&S may conduct spot inspections
- Non-compliant heaters will be removed without notice
4. Exceptions
Requests for exceptions must be submitted in writing to the Environmental & Occupational Safety (E&OS) Office, including justification and specific needs.
5. Enforcement
- Confiscation of non-compliant space heaters
- Disciplinary action in accordance with university policies
