702.5 - Small Appliance Policy
1. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure the safe and appropriate use of small appliances on the UAFS campus to reduce fire hazards, conserve energy, and maintain a safe working and learning environment.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all faculty, staff, students, and visitors who use small appliances in UAFS-owned or leased facilities, including offices, classrooms, breakrooms, residence halls, and common areas.
3. Definition
Small appliances include, but are not limited to:
- Coffee makers
- Toasters and toaster ovens
- Microwaves
- Mini refrigerators
- Electric kettles
- Crock pots and rice cookers
- Portable heaters (restricted)
- Fans
- Air fryers
4. General Guidelines
- Appliances must be UL-listed or carry equivalent certification
- Appliances must be in good working condition
- Plug directly into wall outlets (no extension cords or daisy-chaining)
- Do not leave appliances unattended while in use
- Turn off and unplug when not in use
- Clean regularly to prevent hazards
5. Restricted Areas
Small appliances are not permitted in the following areas without written approval from Facilities Management or Environmental Health & Safety:
- Classrooms (except instructional use)
- Laboratories (unless approved)
- Hallways and stairwells
- Storage closets
6. Residence Halls
Students must follow Housing and Residential Life policies. Typically permitted appliances include:
- Mini refrigerators (≤ 4.5 cu ft)
- Microwaves (≤ 1,000 watts)
- Coffee makers with automatic shutoff
- Electric kettles without exposed heating elements
7. Prohibited Appliances
- Hot plates or open coil burners
- Deep fryers
- Electric grills
- Space heaters (unless provided by Facilities)
- Humidifiers over 1 gallon capacity
8. Enforcement
Supervisors, department heads, and Housing staff are responsible for enforcement. Facilities Management or Environmental Health & Safety may inspect areas and remove unauthorized appliances.
9. Exceptions
Requests for exceptions must be submitted in writing to Facilities Management or Environmental & Occupational Safety with justification and intended use.
