701.3 - Power Tool Safety Policy

1. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to outline the Power Tool Safety Policy in accordance with applicable OSHA regulations.

2. Policy Statement

It is the policy of the University to notify all affected employees of the elements of the Power Tool Safety Program and to require adherence to safe practices when using power tools.

3. Responsibility

Each department is responsible for maintaining the safe condition of tools and equipment used by employees, including those furnished by employees.

4. Program Requirements

Environmental & Occupational Safety (EOS) recommends that departmental personnel responsible for power tools implement a safety training program including the following elements:

  1. Shop Regulations:
    • Define hours of operation
    • Identify authorized users
    • Establish supervision requirements
    • Outline required personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Post regulations in the shop and include in training
  2. Employee/Student Training:
    • Provide instruction on shop regulations and safe tool use
    • Train users to select appropriate tools for each task
    • Conduct training annually for employees and each semester for students
    • Require completion of training before tool use
    • Make operation manuals available
    • Risk Management may provide training support
  3. Training Documentation:
    • All trainees must sign an Acknowledgement Training Form
    • Maintain original copy with trainer
    • Submit copy to Risk Management
  4. Inspection & Maintenance:
    • Inspect tools regularly
    • Repair tools according to manufacturer specifications
    • Inspect tools prior to use
    • Maintain cleanliness and proper function
  5. Inventory Management:
    • Maintain a power tool inventory using Risk Management forms
