Physical Sciences Department

Welcome!

The Department of Physical Sciences offers programs that help students explore the natural world around them and appreciate the importance of science in everyday life. In addition to classroom instruction and hands-on lab work, students in physical sciences programs can participate in faculty-led research projects, present at professional meetings, and share authorship on peer-reviewed publications. Attendance at national conferences provides students opportunities to network with industry leaders and potential graduate school advisors.

B.S. in Chemistry

The Bachelor of Science in chemistry gives students a unique insight into central areas of physical science. This program offers in-depth, hands-on instruction utilizing cutting-edge technology and modern instrumentation. Students can choose a broad training in chemistry or opt for a concentration in biochemistry. The biochemistry concentration offers the ideal preparation for students hoping to gain admission to medical school, dental school, and similar post graduate professional programs.

B.S. in Geoscience

The Bachelor of Science in geoscience prepares students for entry-level positions in the environmental, engineering, or energy resource industries or entry into graduate-level geology degree programs. The demand for professional geoscientists is driven by a growing need for energy production, environmental protection, safe construction practices, and responsible land and resource management.  Geoscience faculty oversee a bustling undergraduate research program. Concentrations are offered in professional and environmental geology. The professional concentration comprises the traditional courses needed to pursue a career in the industry or enter a graduate geology program. The environmental concentration requires courses in geographic information systems (GIS) and organic chemistry.

Chemistry Minor

A minor in chemistry is available for students who are interested in a basic understanding of the field. This is an excellent minor to pair with the B.S. in biology or geoscience, giving students competitive advantage pursuing post graduate employment or further schooling.

Geoscience Minor

This 18-hour minor is designed for students who wish to earn a geoscience credential while majoring in another field, often biology, chemistry, math, or engineering.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Minor

This 20-hour minor provides students with a general overview of GIS mapping and analysis and is an excellent way for students to gain and demonstrate GIS proficiency, a tool used in diverse employments such as wildlife biology, real estate, and government.

Physics Minor

This 15-17-hour program complements degrees in all areas of science by providing a unique insight into the physical sciences.
