Textbooks and Course Materials

Planning ahead is the key to a successful semester at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith, and that starts with your textbooks and course materials.

Whether you buy, rent, or  access materials digitally, you’ll find everything you need here, including payment options, digital access code details, and the Lion Textbook Access Program (LTAP).

Find Your Required Course Materials

Before you purchase any textbooks or course materials, make certain you're officially registered for classes. Then, finding your required materials takes three steps

  1. Log in to your Workday Academics Hub and view your class schedule
  2. Locate your subject, course number, and section
  3. Use the Follett course materials search tool to find required materials 

Because textbook requirements are assigned by section, always search using your specific course section, not just the course number. Once you know what you need, review your purchasing options, such as buying, renting, or using financial aid, before you decide. 

Ways to Get Your Textbooks

You have several options for getting your course materials.

Purchase New or Used Textbooks

You can purchase new or used textbooks through the Follett UAFS Bookstore, online or in person. Benefits include:

  • Using financial aid
  • Ordering online
  • Picking up on campus
  • Having books delivered

Rent Textbooks

Renting can lower your costs on many titles. Keep in mind:

  • Rental prices are often less than buying new
  • Rented books must be returned my a specific date
  • Damaged or unreturned books may result in additional charges
  • Rental availability varies by title

Access Digital Course Materials

Some courses use fully digital materials instead of printed textbooks, including:

  • Access codes
  • Online platforms and software
  • Ebooks

In many courses, purchasing an access code gives you immediate entry to the required online platform.

Lion Textbook Access Program (LTAP)

The Lion Textbook Access Program (LTAP) is a UAFS program that provides participating students with required digital course materials, delivered directly in Blackboard, at a fraction of the regular cost. Students typically save 20 to 60 percent on required materials. LTAP fees are automatically charged to your student account. You can opt out (or back in) up until the final day to add/drop classes for the semester. Not every course participates in LTAP, so check your course information to see if yours does.

Using Financial Aid for Textbooks

If you have eligible financial aid, you may be able to use your available award toward purchases at the Follett UAFS Bookstore. A few things to know:

  • Financial aid can only be used at the campus bookstore and only when eligible funds are available
  • Purchases at outside retailers can't be charged to your financial aid account
  • Your available financial aid depends on your eligibility and account status

Required vs. Recommended Course Materials

Knowing the difference helps you prioritize your purchases.

  • Required materials are necessary to complete the course and are expected by your instructor. Having them lets you fully engage and participate.

  • Recommended materials are optional. They can help you understand course content or prepare for projects and exams.

Frequently asked questions

Log in to Workday to view your class schedule, then note the subject, course number, and section for each class.

Use the Follett UAFS Bookstore search tool to find the required materials. Remember, requirements are assigned by section, not just by course number.

If you purchased your textbooks from the Follett UAFS bookstore and selected in-store pickup during checkout, you can pick your books up at store which is located in the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center. 

Yes. The Follett UAFS bookstore can ship textbooks to you.

It depends on the title. UAFS's Boreham Library has a Textbook Share Program which allows students to checkout a textbook for up to one week.

The program is focused on high-enrollment General Education classes. Visit the library's course reserves search page to see available textbooks. 

You can search by instructor or course number. You can also scroll the page to find your course's subject. 

An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a unique number assigned to each textbook edition. Matching the correct ISBN ensures you buy the exact edition your course requires.

Only if your instructor says an earlier edition is acceptable. Assignments, page numbers, and online resources can differ between editions.

Some instructors use free course materials or post everything in Blackboard, UAFS's learning management system. If nothing is listed, check with bookstore staff or your instructor.

If your financial aid exceeds your university charges, the Financial Aid & Veterans Benefit Office will send a bookstore authorization to the Follett UAFS bookstore. 

Once authorized, you can use your bookstore authorization to purchase eligible educational materials by presenting your photo ID in the bookstore or by shopping through the online bookstore. 

If you are eligible for a bookstore authorization, the Follett UAFS bookstore will send an email to your UAFS email account with the amount you are authorized to charge during the bookstore charging period.
